CLIMATE CHANGE AND FUTURE WATER RESOURCES

06 October 2021                                                                  1pm - 2pm

How will future climate change will affect water resources in the UK and Ireland, such as the seasonality and timing of streamflow; the frequency, severity and duration of extreme events; and water quality?

Speaker: Dr Richard Dallison, School of Natural Sciences, Bangor University

Host: Dr Sopan Patil, School of Natural Sciences, Bangor University

This webinar offers a great opportunity to learn about the Dŵr Uisce project’s latest work in quantifying the impact of climate change on hydrology and water quality in Wales, and its implications for run-of-river hydropower operations and other water uses. This session will provide opportunity for themed discussions on the future challenges facing water abstractors across the UK and Ireland, as well as a Q&A.

Join the Webinar to learn more about the impacts of future climate change on water resources in the UK and Ireland.

Content: This webinar will present the latest results from the Dŵr Uisce project on the impacts of the RCP8.5 (worst-case) climate change scenario on the hydrology and water quality of rivers in Wales. We will also discuss the implications of such changes on hydropower operations and other water uses, as well as place the work within the context of the wider UK and Ireland. This is an interactive session which will also provide time for discussions on the challenges facing the different water users in Wales and how these could be tackled. These conversations may feed directly into the future research direction and decisions of the Dŵr Uisce project and help us provide research outcomes that are relevant and useful to the wider community.

Audience: hydropower operators, water companies, local authorities, organisations and pubic bodies with an interest in water resources, and anyone keen to understand more about the potential impacts of climate change on water resources in the UK and Ireland.

Do participants need prior knowledge of the topic? No

What participants will learn during the webinar: How future climate change will affect the hydrology of Wales, in particular changes in the seasonality and timing of streamflow, alterations to hydrological regime (average, high and low flows), and water quality. Implications for water abstractors across the UK will be discussed, with hydropower used as a case study.
