Water & Energy in Rural Communities 2018

The Dŵr Uisce team in Ireland is collaborating with the National Federation of Group Water Schemes in organising the workshop "Water and Energy in rural communities" in Kilkenny (Hotel Kilkenny) on April 26 next. Dŵr Uisce stands for 'Distributing our Water Resources: Utilising Integrated, Smart and low-Carbon Energy'. It is led by a team made up of researchers from Trinity College Dublin and Bangor University in Wales. The team has extensive experience in energy technology, environmental impact assessments, climate change and business collaboration. The project runs until September 2021, and is supported through the Ireland-Wales Co-operation Programme 2014-2020. Over the past year, the team has visited a number of GWS sites around the country and will include some observations from this work in the workshop.

The objectives of the workshop are:

  • To present, discuss and learn from some of actual case-studies in the area of energy recovery from water distribution systems and wastewater systems, using hydropower turbines, pump optimisation and leakage reduction.

  • To build on the research connections between members of Group Water Schemes in Ireland and the Dŵr Uisce project team, legislators and technology providers.

  • To explore opportunities for energy recovery within the member schemes and implementation challenges.

  • To create new learning opportunities and connections for workshop participants.

Who should attend:

  • Operators and managers of Group Water Schemes in rural communities in Ireland

  • Companies, researchers and other stakeholders interested in Energy and Water saving challenges
